Thorough review of pre-university skills in chemistry. Topics discussed will include: measurement (units and reliability), dimensional analysis, atoms (modern atomic theory, structure, molar mass, Avogadro’s number), molecules, ions, ionic compounds, chemical formulas and naming. Chemical reactions and stoichiometry will be introduced. While there is no associated lab, foundational lab skills (an introduction to lab equipment, lab notebooks, and lab report writing) will be included. The course will not count towards satisfying program requirements in programs offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, but does serve as a pathway to CH110/120/130, and other subsequent chemistry courses. Prerequisites: One of: 12U Advanced Functions, 3U Functions and Relations, 3M Functions. Exclusions: If a student has successfully passed, or is currently enrolled in CH110, CH120, or CH130 then SC102 will not be eligible for credit. The course will not count towards satisfying program requirements in programs offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, but does serve as a pathway to CH110/120/130, and other subsequent chemistry courses.
